Baby Einstein: Baby’s First Sounds

April 10th, 2008 Jenny

Baby Einstein: Baby’s First SoundsI got a new Baby Einstein DVD for my son the other day, Baby’s First Sounds. When he came home from school and saw it on the counter, he immediately demanded that it be opened and he be allowed to put into the DVD player by himself. Ok no problem. As soon as the movie started, he was on the couch singing along and talking with it, making all the sounds and saying all the words. It was adorable. Sometimes I wish I had a video camera.

The entire Baby Einstein series is very educational. All though not meant to teach your child completely, these videos show them the basics of colors, shapes, sounds, words, and more. And they not only teach one language. Like this DVD. The sounds they taught were in English as well as other languages. Spanish being one of them. I think the best part of the video is that they use all kinds of objects, pictures and cutest of all, puppets. The baby loved those the most. I think it really helps keep them interested, especially if they have short attention spans, like mine. :)

We really enjoyed this video. The baby watches it maybe one to two times a day since he got it. And it has been helping him improve some of his words. I totally recommend this video to any Baby Einstein fan or anyone who is looking to give their child something entertaining to watch that they can learn from.

Retail Price: $19.99

Hi Jenny, I love reviews and thanks for taking the time with them.

In light of this review, I’m wondering if you have any comments about the recent study finding that the Baby Einstein series actually impedes language development in children?

It was covered pretty heavily in the fall when the research findings came out. And Disney, the producers of the Baby Einstein series has been trying to force researchers at the University of Washington to revoke the study.

The findings, in a nutshell are this… children 8-16 months of age who watched the videos for at least one hour per day knew 6-8 FEWER words than other children their age (here’s the Boston Globe article).

The odd thing is 32% of American children under the age of three watch these video even though the American Academy of Pediatrics have recommended that a child under the age of two should have NO TV exposure at all (overview of study’s findings).

Anyhow, I know this is a touchy and controversial subject. Just wondering your thoughts on the matter.

And why I’m up on these studies…I have three kids four and under and we’ve done a ton of research on the effects of ’screen-time’ (computers too) on kids under 7.

If you’d like to chat about this, feel free to contact me through my website (in the link above).

That seems like an interesting concept - emphasizing the first sounds. My boys would go for that! I wonder if they have it in Spanish…
